CogSci Mentor Program

CogSci 2024 is again hosting a one-time Pop-Up Mentoring Event. This event is free and open to Cognitive Society Members attending the conference in Rotterdam. We hope to expand and resume our virtual mentoring platform participants in future years.

This mentoring program gives all members the opportunity to meet with a mentor or mentee outside their official support system to discuss a range of topics – including work/life balance, minority status, international student/faculty status, and applying to positions within and outside of academia.

Members can sign up to participate as a mentor, mentee, or both! Mentors and mentees will be matched by the CogSci Mentorship Committee based on shared interests, backgrounds or identities. Mentees will be matched with one mentor, while mentors will be matched with up to three mentees. Whenever possible, mentors and mentees should plan for brief 30-min in-person meetings during the CogSci2024 Conference.

Why Participate?

For Mentors

In addition to giving back to the CogSci community, participation provides mentors with opportunities to become familiar with the broader perspectives of junior colleagues across their fields of research – beyond the perspectives of those at their own institutions. It also provides mentors with opportunities to reflect on their own experiences, clarify what they’ve learned from them, and generalize their advice to colleagues with different backgrounds and experiences.

For Mentees

Participation provides mentees with the opportunity to meet with someone outside their department and institution, to talk about issues that they may feel uncomfortable sharing with their advisor(s), or to reflect on shared experiences. In addition, meeting mentors outside normal support networks can help mentees extend their network of personal and academic support, learn how to make the most of their conference experiences, and find role models in the community that they can look up to.

Registration information

To participate, CogSci members must complete the Mentor and/or Mentee Background & Interest forms before May 17, 2024.

(You must complete these forms even if you indicated interest during Conference Registration)
